Granulomatous foreign-body reaction with facial dermal fillers after omalizumab treatment for severe persistent allergic asthma: a case report

Abstract:

Complications with the increased use of dermal fillers and new therapies with immunomodulatory effects may be increasing. We report on a 50-year-old woman who presented disfiguring facial edema 1 month after the initiation of omalizumab treatment for severe persistent allergic asthma. She had received multiple cosmetic filler injections, including hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite, for 4 years without any previous side effects. A biopsy of a lip nodule revealed a foreign-body granulomatous reaction. Treatment was with high-dose prednisone and doxycycline, with clinical improvement.
