Malignant Skin Tumours in Inherited Ichthyosis Patients

Summary

Inherited ichthyoses are rare genodermatoses caused by mutations in the genes involved in epidermal development. Although there have been case reports on ichthyosis patients who developed skin malignancies, it is still unknown whether ichthyosis patients have an increased risk of skin malignancies. Here, we review case series of skin malignancies in ichthyosis patients and show biological findings which might lead to cancer susceptibility. A survey of the literature found 28 cases of inherited ichthyoses with skin malignancy, including 12 cases of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome, 7 of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis, ...

Review of sunscreen and the emergence of non-conventional absorbers and their applications in ultraviolet protection

Synopsis

Protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major function of sunscreen lotions and UV-protective coatings for vehicles, homes, equipment and clothing. Sunscreen formulations have been optimized to become protective over a broader spectrum of UV radiation and maintain greater photostability. They are comprised of organic and inorganic components that act as chemical and physical UV protectors, respectively. Some of the organic components are limited by their spectrum of protection and photostability. Studies using solid lipid nanoparticles, recently explored organic molecules, inorganic components and antioxidants attempt to further optimize UV protection. ...

Squamous cell carcinoma presenting as multiple discharging sinuses on the chin

Summary

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) usually presents as a raised, firm, pink to skin-coloured keratotic papule, plaque or ulcer, arising on sun-exposed skin. We report an unusual case of a 65-year-old male patient who presented with a 1-year history of multiple discharging sinuses on his chin, which on investigation was found to be an SCC. A malignancy should be considered in the differential diagnoses of patients presenting with multiple discharging sinuses on the chin. We discuss other possible diagnoses for sinuses presenting on the face.

Obesity and psoriasis: body weight and body mass index influence the response to biological treatment

Abstract

Patients with psoriasis, in particular those requiring systemic treatment, tend to be above normal weight. Obesity is associated with psoriasis and contributes significantly to the increased cardiovascular risk in these patients. Most biologics used to treat psoriasis in the European Union are fixed dosed treatments: etanercept, adalimumab and ustekinumab. Apart from infliximab, dosing regimens do not account for weight, with the exception of ustekinumab, the dose of which should be doubled in patients weighing more than 100 kg. The aim of this study was to review the available evidence on the ...

A microbial aetiology of acne-what is the evidence?

Summary

A microbial aetiology of acne has been suggested since the beginning of the last century. There is considerable evidence, circumstantial at best, which suggests that micro-organisms, particularly Propionibacterium acnes, are important in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. However, it is still unclear whether Propionibacterium acnes is actually a causal agent in the development of non-inflamed or inflamed acne lesions. Based on a review of the microbiological data on normal and acne affected skin, we propose that Propionibacterium acnes neither initiates comedogenesis nor does it have a role in the initiation ...
