Association Between Atopic Dermatitis and Obesity in Adulthood

Abstract

Background:  Obesity in early childhood is associated with increased risk for and severity of atopic dermatitis (AD).


Objective:  To determine whether obesity in adulthood is associated with risk of AD.


Methods:  A retrospective case-control study of 2,090 adults with questionnaire, height weight, and skin-prick testing between January 1994 and December 2003.


Results:  (1) Obesity in adults is associated with increased AD (multinomial logistic regression; aOR=1.42, 95% CI=1.07–1.87, P=0.01), but not non-atopic dermatitis (aOR=0.44, 95% CI=0.13–1.44, P=0.17).
