Involvement of upper cheek sagging in nasolabial fold formation

Background:

Nasolabial folds are a well-known feature of aging, but the mechanism of their formation remains unclear.

Objectives:

To clarify the mechanism of nasolabial fold formation, we established grading criteria for severity and explored the influence of dermal elasticity and subcutaneous adipose mass. We also investigated the involvement of facial morphological changes, such as wrinkling and sagging.

Methods:

Faces of 108 healthy Japanese female volunteers (age range: 20–60) were photographed at the angle of 45°, and a six-grade photograph-based grading scheme for nasolabial fold severity was established and evaluated. In 70 Japanese female volunteers (middle-aged: ...

Surgical scar remodelling after photodynamic therapy using Aminolevulinic-acid (ALA) or methyl-ester of ALA: a retrospective, blinded study of patients with field cancerization

SUMMARY

Background:  Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-surgical alternative to conventional tumour excision for non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC).

Objective:  We evaluated whether patients with field cancerization (multiple NMSC) treated with aminolevulinic acid (ALA) or methyl-ester of ALA (MAL) for that indication had PDT-induced changes in surgical scars in the treatment field.

Patients/Methods:  Six adult patients with multiple NMSC and a total of 21scars from previous excisions were studied in a retrospective blinded evaluation from clinical photographs of scar response to ALA/MAL-PDT. After a 3 hour application of topical 20% ALA or 16.8% MAL ...

Vessel Resistance To Blood Flow In The Nailfold In Patients With Psoriasis: A Prospective Case-Control Echo Doppler-Based Study

ABSTRACT

Background:  Psoriasis is a disease in which endothelial cells seem to play an important pathogenic role. No report published to date has examined of nail vascularity in psoriasis patients

Objetive:  Evaluate the vascularity in the nails of patients with psoriasis treated with classic and biologic therapies for comparison to disease-free controls. Furthermore, we evaluated whether there were differences in nail vascularity among patients with and without nail involvement

Methods:  We performed a prospective study with 2 cohorts comprising 23 patients with moderate-severe psoriasis and 23 controls without psoriasis. We measured the nailfold ...

Effects of bosentan on non-digital ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis

Abstract

Background:  Bosentan is an oral dual endothelin receptor antagonist, which has been proven to be efficacious for preventing new digital ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) by two high quality randomized controlled trials. However, its efficacy for non-digital ulcers in SSc has still remained unknown.

Objective:  To evaluate the efficacy of bosentan on non-digital ulcers in patients with SSc.

Methods:  Bosentan was administered against 5 SSc patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, who also had non-digital ulcers refractory to conventional treatments. The efficacy of bosentan on non-digital ulcers and its association with ...
