Background: In vivo confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) is a recently developed non-invasive technique for visualizing microscopic structures with the skin. CSLM has been used to characterize proliferative and inflammatory skin diseases, neoplastic skin lesions and pigmented lesions.

In vivo skin measurements with a novel probe head for simultaneous skin impedance and near-infrared spectroscopy


Background/purpose: Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and skin impedance (IMP) measurements are useful techniques for objective diagnostics of various skin diseases. Here, we present a combined probe head for simultaneous, time-saving NIR spectroscopy and skin impedance measurements. The probe also ensures that both measurements are performed under equal conditions and at the same skin location.

The Role of Sirolimus in the Prevention of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Organ Transplant Recipients


Skin cancers are common in organ transplant recipients (OTRs). In this review, we discuss the epidemiology of and risk factors for cutaneous neoplasms, particularly squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in OTRs. The pathogenesis of SCC is reviewed, as well as the potential mechanisms for tumor progression and metastasis associated with two commonly used immunosuppressive medications: tacrolimus and cyclosporine. Finally, we discuss the mechanism of action and potential preventative use of sirolimus, a member of a newer class of immunosuppressants, the mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors.
